In his campaign, President Donald Trump said he would crack down on illegal immigration. And indeed he is–in one of the worst ways possible.
President Trump has sent out ICE agents to arrest illegal immigrants and send them to detention centers as part of his plan. In doing so, he is targeting innocent people, harming communities and even posing a danger to American citizens.
Most illegal immigrants are harmless and help enrich communities with their cultures–all they really did was not provide proper documentation when entering the country. However, the Trump administration is treating them like aliens and vile criminals who should be faced with violence and persecution.
That’s not all–not even American citizens are safe. On January 7th, 37-year-old Renee Good, an American woman, was shot and killed by ICE agents while she tried to drive away in her car, and on January 24th, American intensive care nurse, Alex Pretti, 37, was also killed by ICE agents in a brutal confrontation.
This has caused tremendous outrage in the U.S., as it should. ICE is compromising the safety of those who have done no real harm and were hoping to seek refuge in America, as well as those who shouldn’t even be targeted by them.
ICE uses violent tactics to carry out their duties, such as pulling people to the floor, holding people at gunpoint and forcing themselves into people’s houses without a warrant. This only adds insult to injury, as again, they’re going after a population who, at most, cause strain on local infrastructure, school systems, and healthcare in border regions.
That’s like aiming to put someone who littered the floor one time in jail for a year. Besides, the America we know today was literally founded by immigrants who illegally–and rather violently–colonized the land.
With all that in mind, the most ideal way to address this would be to not crack down on illegal immigration at all.
However there could be another way. WJPS history teacher Mr. Mengani stated, “If you’re serious about illegal immigration, go after the employers who hire illegal immigrants. Watch how fast the problem will get solved.”
