World Journalism Preparatory School seniors are allowed to leave as early as 12:52 P.M., approximately an hour and a half earlier than other grades. Many seniors appreciate this privilege, but is it really beneficial to all of them?
Not all seniors have cars or are always able to get picked up by their parents from school, so they either have to take an Uber home or take the bus, the bus being the cheapest option for most.
However, some buses take longer than others to arrive, especially the Q76. Typically, when seniors leave after period six, they have to wait at least 15 minutes for the Q76 to arrive at the bus stop, almost never having anything they can do in the meantime.
However, sometimes the Q76 arrives right after 12:52, so seniors might always head to the bus stop at that time so that they can catch the bus right then and there.
To solve this issue, WJPS should release seniors sooner so that any seniors who have to take the Q76 home will be able to catch it on time without having to wait.
WJPS 12th grader Jamie Baumann commented, “I think the senior release times are soon enough. I feel like the Q76 comes earlier than it did before, because people don’t have to wait, like, 45 minutes after school.”
WJPS Assistant Principal Mr. Yarmy stated, “I think as long as they’ve met all their class requirements and are on track to graduate, then it makes sense for them to leave when they do. However, if they’re not on track to graduate, then they have to stay the full day to make up their work.”
