Global Awareness: The Importance of Igniting Change

By: Mariam Wali, Opinion Reporter

In an international connective era, awareness of social issues on a global scale is more critical than ever. Recognizing and understanding global social issues is essential for creating a fair and just world.

Acknowledging international struggles promotes a shared humanity, and encourages collective efforts to address problems. Informed citizens are the foundation of thriving democracies, and knowledge of global social issues equips them to make informed decisions in civic participation.

The ongoing situation regarding Gaza exemplifies conflicts like economic hardships, deaths, and limited resources formed by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Recognizing Gaza’s issues underscores the urgency for global awareness and collective action to address humanitarian crises, emphasizing that creating a fair world requires not just empathy, but concrete efforts to alleviate the struggles faced by communities like those in Gaza.

Ongoing boycotts that exert economic pressure on entities or governments associated with damaging actions are affecting Gaza. Boycotting goods or services linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can impact the economic interests of those involved and potentially encourage a reevaluation of policies.

WJPS 12th grader Riley Ramnath said, “It’s important to stay informed in our problematic world.”

WJPS 12th grader Lesly Gonzalez said, “Everyone has the power to fight global humanitarian conflicts.”

Awareness of global social issues isn’t a luxury, but a responsibility. It’s the foundation upon which we build a more compassionate, educated, and interconnected world; where individuals and communities actively contribute to positive change on a global stage.
