Backlash has been pouring out towards New York City Mayor Eric Adams as he introduced a new school policy—Vegan Fridays. This initiative will supposedly eliminate any non-vegan foods and introduce more healthy food options to the public school lunch menus.
Reviews are mixed on the taste of the food. Upon receiving a lunch tray, the broccoli tasted overcooked and the tortilla wrap was freezing cold.
Despite Mayor Adams keenness towards this new initiative, some parents and students have not been very happy about the new decision. On top of that, these parties have argued that some of the food can’t even be considered vegan based on their analysis of the ingredients in the food.
On Twitter, Mayor Adams updated, “The reviews are in! The kids at PS130 are loving the very first Vegan Friday lunch menu. When our kids are healthy, they’re happy and they’re hungry to learn.”
Is this really an accurate survey? It appears that Mayor Adams is basing his tweet off of only one school, an elementary school at that, and who knows how many students he actually asked?
Little kids love attention and are fascinated by change, so it only makes sense that they wouldn’t be shouting complaints about school food. Certain kids are also picky eaters, so it begs the question, did Adams pick and choose which student’s feedback to include?
WJPS English teacher Mrs. Mills said, “I think that vegan Fridays are a terrible implementation. I think the person that universally changed this should have consulted the stakeholders before doing so.”
WJPS sophomore Katelyn Viglietta said, “The pizza before vegan fridays was really good and now they’ve changed the menu and we can’t get pizza anymore which is disappointing.”
