Many are familiar with Taylor Swift’s first six albums. In June 2019, her former label, Big Machine co-owned by Scott Borchetta, was bought for $300 million by Scooter Braun, giving him complete ownership of those albums.
When the issue was publicized, many were supportive of Swift, telling Braun that he should return her ownership. He received backlash for his actions, but didn’t return the records to Swift.
Swift came out with a post claiming that Braun won’t let her re-record her music or perform it on tour. She explained that she tried handling the matter privately, but didn’t make any progress. Swift is now asking fans and artists under Braun and Borchetta’s management to help.
Braun eventually gave in and allowed Swift to perform her music, but still keeps ownership.
WJPS sixth grader, Brianna Limandari said, “It’s her work and if she’s not allowed to get in on her own record, what’s the point of doing it if she’s not getting any of the profits? I just don’t think it’s fair.”
“I think it’s really wrong, but although I am a big Taylor Swift fan, I’ll always be biased. But even if it was just anybody, I’d still be like, really sad, but he is letting her play her music now so I think it’s good and he did the right thing,” said WJPS 11th grader, Sabrina McCallef..
