In WJPS the rules for personal devices are confusing.
Cell phones, airpods, and other common electronic devices are not allowed by New York City Department of Education guidelines. Some teachers at WJPS will confiscate them on site, however others don’t mind. This is questionable.
If personal devices are not allowed, it’s more difficult for students to stay organized as they have to keep switching between personal laptops and the school laptops.
WJPS teacher Ms. Marks said, “I don’t mind if students use their personal laptops in my class, as long as they stay on task I believe it’s easier for students to work on devices their used to.”
It’s true, when students use laptops provided by the school it takes away from learning.
Students have to spend another 5-10 minutes just to log in, open their task and start working.
WJPS 12th grader Eliza Hadzovic said, “It’s easier to just use our own devices, the school’s computers are always slow and take forever to load.”
School laptops being slow has been a thing for years, whenever you try to sign in, look something up, or even load a presentation it takes a bit to load, most likely due to the mass amount of people signed in.
If the school wants to outlaw personal devices completely, they’ll need to upgrade their own, they’ll need to make it worth the switch, otherwise students will just stick with the convenient way, their own devices.
