Roblox has announced plans for the future of its platform. This includes an update to its game making standards as well as age grouped sub platforms.
Roblox has shown there new requirements for publishing games on to the platform, these being; account must be at least two days old, must have an active Roblox plus subscription and must have a completed age check as well as filling out a new evaluation process.
Roblox also plans to split their playerbase to three separate platforms, this being; Roblox Kids, Roblox Select and the current Roblox. The ages of the age groups will be; 9 and under, 9-16 and 16+ respectively.
Roblox likely wants to implement these changes in hopes that it will enforce client safety and user behavior, however this only alienates their community, the platform once known for creative expression and “powering imagination” now only seems to have stricken their playerbase in order to appeal to the public about their safety.
WJPS 12th grader Joseph Weir said, “I think that the intentions are good but it’s gonna put a hindrance on some friend groups that have a mix of ages. I think paying to have to make games will only cause trouble to independent creators.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Bonanni said, “I feel comfortable knowing my son will be in a different age group than older kids. I think that people will be less likely to create unsafe games now that they have to pay.”
