President Donald J. Trump has expressed running for a third term despite the 22nd amendment preventing presidents from running more than two terms. This has been controversial for decades, and this amendment should be repealed.
Given that the United States is a democracy, people should have the right to vote whether or not they want to re-elect a president who has served more than two terms. This also may allow candidates to eye and achieve long term goals knowing they can be voted for more than two terms.
WJPS 12th grader Erica Lin has stated, “Getting rid of the 22nd amendment will expand people’s freedom and they can decide if they want to keep the current president for more than eight years.”
The 22nd amendment was added after some politicians at the time believed there should be a set number of terms a president can run for. The reason for this was because former president Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to four terms.
WJPS 12th grader Vanessa Arellano said, “We should keep the 22nd amendment because there might be people in the future who might refuse to step down from the presidency, which can create a lot of problems.”
