After 27 years, it’s time to say goodbye to student metrocards and hello to new student OMNY cards. The OMNY (One Metro New York) cards debuted in the 2024-25 school year and features 24/7 access to MTA subways and buses with four rides a day.
The OMNY cards are a big improvement from the student metrocards. Previously, student metrocards only provided bus and train access during the weekdays and from 5:30 a.m to 8:30 p.m, while the 24/7 availability feature is a great way to get to your destination over the weekends if you need to.
The new cards allow students who participate in PSAL sports to travel to games or practices over the weekends. The OMNY cards also allow students who have College Now classes on Saturday to travel to Queensborough Community College.
WJPS ninth grader Arturo Mendoza stated, “They’re very useful on the weekends because before you couldn’t use them.”
WJPS 11th grader Aida Dervisevic said, “I think they are a little bit inefficient because it takes a long time for the transaction to process.”
The new OMNY cards also allow students to take the buses and trains during the holidays to get where they need to go.
