Summer school can be a frequent concern for students, especially around the start of second semester. Many students check their grades days before final grades get published.
Checking grades right before the final grades are published can affect students significantly because it shows students aren’t putting all of their effort, and instead just trying for a passing grade.
Students should be given one last assignment for the semester that is graded the same as the rest, and that should be the only resort for boosting their grade. Giving students a second chance is unrealistic for the real world.
WJPS 10th grader Noah Lim stated, “I don’t like the idea of ruining my summer to go to school, so if I was failing I would ask for extra credit.”
Extra credit has become normalized in schools as students only push themselves when it comes to the last chance they get, which shows procrastination.
WJPS ninth grader Amanda Rodriguez stated, “I do my work on time so when the day comes and grades are due I don’t have to worry.”
The consequence of not doing work shouldn’t be easy to avoid.
