Has The Pandemic Affected The Way Students Socialize In The Classroom?

After a year and a half of remote learning, school has resumed in person.  This has taken a toll on social skills in the classroom. During remote learning, students did not have the opportunity to be in a classroom setting and interact with one another. It consisted of limited group work and emailing back and forth.

The pandemic has led to a steep decrease in socialization within the classroom.

Many students already have anxiety, having been away from school for so long.  To come back knowing they have to face group work and interaction can be a nerve-racking change.

WJPS teacher Mr.VanDeurs said, “When we were fully remote last year I didn’t see much socializing, especially in the breakout room my students were quiet and when we came back, the discussions were a bit awkward and students were hesitant to talk in the classroom.”

WJPS senior Jenny Kuo said, “Around two weeks ago when school started, classes were really quiet and it was almost intimidating to say anything.”

As the school year progresses hopefully students will interact more with one another.
