The app X, formerly known as Twitter, has its own AI bot, “Grok.” Users on X are able to give Grok prompts, like asking questions, clarifying something that doesn’t make sense, or generating images.
However, Britain’s media regulator, Ofcom, has begun an investigation into Grok after many non-consensual and sexually explicit deepfake images have been made on X by users.
This falls in line with a law that was passed in the U.K. titled the Online Safety Act. According to bbc.com, Ofcom could “issue X with a fine of up to 10% of its worldwide revenue.”
As of now, images can only be created by those who purchase the in-app subscription X Premium. Elon Musk, CEO of X, reposted many posts on the site criticizing the Labour party, also saying “They just want to suppress free speech.”
WJPS 12th grader Jack Annibale said, “I think that there should be more regulations online in order to protect users, especially children.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Cicillini said, “I don’t think we’re ready for the implementation of AI on social media. There are people of all ages on many apps, and it’s important that everyone feels safe there.”
