A study conducted by UN Women UK showed that 97% of women between 18 and 24 years old have experienced some sort of sexual harassment in public, whether that be catcalling or physical force.
These statistics resulted in an uproar of aggression and encouraged female influencers, celebrities and other women in the general public to come out and share their experiences of being a part of the 97%.
Many found themselves normalizing some forms of sexual harassment like catcalling, until this news broke and many people realized that those who have been catcalled, are also part of this large percentage.
WJPS senior Sabrina Micallef stated, “It’s hard to put into words how I feel that 97% of women have experienced the same thing that I and many others have dealt with. Even if it’s not 100%, the number is far too high.”
Another WJPS senior, Erick Garcia said, “I think men need to be more aware of women’s feelings and be more educated to avoid doing creepy things like that. No one should have to regularly deal with that. I think it should be talked about in schools more to educate guys on what they shouldn’t do in certain situations that would make a woman uncomfortable, and how they can help a woman who is facing this situation with someone else.”
