In accordance with New York state law, New York City Public Schools, is revising its policy in regard to the use of personal devices in schools.
According to the NYCPS website, this change is in support of New York state’s goal to create distraction-free classrooms. Its main focus is to create a safe and focused learning environment in every school.
Cell phones, laptops, tablets, and portable music and entertainment systems are all considered personal devices. The ban is implemented under the updated policy Chancellor’s Regulation A-413.
Students are permitted to bring their own personal devices to school, but must keep them locked away during school hours.
If a student uses their device without permission, the school may address the issue by conferencing with parents or temporarily confiscating their devices.
However, some schools may allow students to use their personal devices only for educational purposes under the instruction of a teacher.
WJPS eighth grader Gianna Nuñez said, “I understand why the ban needed to be implemented, but as someone who likes to work on my own laptop, it’s kind of annoying.”
WJPS 12th grader Nataly Ramirez said, “I like to use my own laptop in school because I’m more comfortable and familiar with it which I think helps me work faster and more efficiently.”
