With the calendar flipping over to spring a new baseball season is upon us.
Opening night for Major League Baseball is scheduled for March 25th when the New York Yankees will head to San Francisco to take on the Giants. The next two days all other teams will compete in their first games.
Offseason changes took place in the winter with multiple stars going to different teams.
The New York Mets lost first baseman Pete Alonso in free agency as he signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
They also lost Edwin Diaz to the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, but infielder Bo Bichette signed with the team. Plus, the Mets traded for pitcher Freddy Peralta in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
On the other side of New York, the Yankees went on to re-sign Cody Bellinger in a new five year contract.
Some other big names include outfielder Kyle Tucker who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitcher Framber Valdez signed with the Detroit Tigers, and pitcher Ranger Suarez went to the Boston Red Sox.
WJPS 11th grader Max Sanz, stated, “I’m a Yankees fan and listen, I was happy we were able to keep Bellinger. But I was looking for more out of my team to get better. We’ll see what happens.”
WJPS ninth grader Miguel Zapateiro stated, “It was a wild offseason. So many big names switched teams, it was exciting to see.”
