The company 23andMe officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, meaning it has been fixing some economic problems within the company while still active.
23andMe was launched in 2003 by Anne Wojciki, as a way for users to learn about their family’s health history.
This also allowed for users to send in a sample of their DNA, an example being a saliva test, to learn about their ancestry, or family history.
However, the company has faced many challenges, including a data breach which occurred in 2023, this led to the DNA being leaked of nearly seven million users.
According to CNBC, 23andMe has “15 million customers and with calls for users to delete their data,” as well as adding “its website surged 526% on the day of its bankruptcy filing.”
This situation is still ongoing and outcomes are yet to be determined.
WJPS 11th grader Jonathan Honya said, “Hopefully this situation can be handled quickly. It’s dangerous knowing that a lot of private information could be taken.”
WJPS 11th grader Jack Annibale said, “Even if they delete the information, I think this will really hurt the company in the future. They had a lot of problems before, so I don’t think many people will use it.”
