Residents in Queens, Long Island, and even as far as New Jersey saw a teal blue color
light up the night sky on January 3rd from a transformer explosion in Astoria. As a result, many people experienced power outages.
There was no reported damage to nearby homes, and no injuries were reported. By around 11:20 p.m., power lines serving the area were back in service. The cause of the transformer explosion, police said, was determined to be a non-suspicious equipment malfunction.
The explosion had a large impact citywide. LaGuardia Airport went dark, Rikers Island jail was on backup generators, and the 7 train saw major delays in both directions. Many people crowded the streets in Queens and swarmed to social media to try to figure out what caused the mysterious blue-green glow in the sky.
