Select World Journalism Preparatory School students had the chance to attend a journalism conference on Friday, November 7th at Baruch College in New York City. At this year’s event, New York One’s Myles Miller was the keynote speaker.

Approximately 200 high school students attended this year’s event, coming from schools from all boroughs. Throughout the day, students had the chance to attend workshops based on journalism, such as Photo Editing 101 and Weather Forecasting. These workshops were led by professors from Baruch College and local journalists.

Students attending the event then had a chance to have a press conference with RueZalia Watkins, the Education Services Specialist at Vibrant Emotional Health, who supports the efforts of NYC WELL and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

WJPS Senior, Deborah King, who attended the event, said “I believe that journalism is an important part of our school, and the students at our school should learn more about it.” King added, “I think other WJPS students should go to events like this if they have a chance, especially because it is part of our curriculum.”

The conference was concluded with an awards ceremony. The awards were given out to school publications who had produced the best stories from 15 categories, ranging from Multimedia Storytelling to Illustrations/Comics/Political Cartoons.
