Red carpet, long dresses, tuxes, photographers and finally only a few golden globes to be given away. The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held on January 15th, and they were broadcasted live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
The nominees were announced by Woody Harrelson, Sofia Vergara, Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones nearly a month ago on December 15, 2011 confirms goldenglobe.org, the official website for the awards. Some of the movies of 2011 that topped the nominations were: “The Bridesmaids”, “Hugo”, “The Help”, “The Descendants”, “Moneyball” and “Midnight in Paris”.
It’s not only the movies that everyone was excited to watch but also the actors and actresses that were lucky to walk away with a golden globe in their hands. Winners included: George Clooney (The Descendants), Meryl Streep ( Iron Lady), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Michelle Williams (One Week with Marylyn), Octavia Spencer (The Help), Martin Scorcese (Hugo) etc.
What is special about these awards is that they are not judged based on the public opinions or the public’s votes. Who actually does the judging is the HEPA which stands for The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s, which has enabled the non-profit organization to donate more than $12 million in the past seventeen years to entertainment-related charities. This association had humble origins that came from a group of journalists’ desire to efficiently and accurately cover all aspects of the world of entertainment.
Some were excited to see the Golden Globes and some were not. Senior Michelle Xia said: “I think 2011 was a great year for movies. I really enjoyed watching the “Planet of the Apes” and “Mission Impossible”, but I think my all time favorite from 2011 was the last Harry Potter movie. I have been so caught up in work and senior year things that I didn’t have time to look forward to such events that normally excite me.”
Others enjoyed watching the awards and were looking forward to see the stars pick up their golden globes.
“I watched the Golden Globes. I was looking forward to them, and to seeing who would win since they were kind of the first awards of the entire “award season.” A lot of movies and shows were nominated that I like; like The Help, Bridesmaids, Crazy Stupid Love and Glee,” said senior Katherine Papathedorou.
