Hall Sweeps

Hall+Sweeps

Hall sweeps, a new WJPS policy re-introduced by the school administration is designed to address a safety concern of an influx of students in the hallways during passing time between each period. According to WJPS assistant principal, Mr. Yarmy hall sweeps also provide a sense of urgency to certain students who feel indifferent about getting to class on time by introducing an extra consequence.

During hall sweeps, teachers lock their doors a few minutes after the start of the period. Any student who is still wandering in the hallways will be picked up and given after school detention to serve that day.

Mr. Yarmy said, “The hall sweep is for the student who doesn’t care enough to get to their class on time and is wasting time by their locker and just reporting several minutes late because they can.”

Opinions are mixed from the school community.

WJPS teacher, Mr Reff said, “I think that there are too many students out in the hallways between each period, so I think that they will be good for the school.”

WJPS senior, Sandra Amastal said, “I think that they should also accommodate students who come late for a good reason and focus on the people who are skipping class.”
