At 10:25 am, on Friday, April 5th, New York experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, affecting people throughout the area, including the students and staff at WJPS. The quake was centered near Lebanon, New Jersey, but was reported to be felt throughout the Northeast, even as far as New Hampshire.
The event was unexpected due to the lack of fault lines in the area. The previous earthquake in New York CIty happened in August of 2011, which was centered in Virginia.
Many students and teachers at WJPS reported feeling the tremors, and were initially confused until they received multiple amber alerts on their phones. The school shook for approximately 15-30 seconds.
WJPS dean Ms. McCloskey commented on the event, “I was confused. I thought something was happening downstairs and I didn’t realize it was an earthquake until after it occurred.”
WJPS 11th grader Victoria Sepulveda said, “I thought someone was shaking my chair behind me and then I got text messages that it was actually an earthquake. They were asking me if I was ok.”
