Slowing down in NYC

NYC has been under a lot of changes and controversy surrounding the states speed limit. Local streets it used to be a maximum of 30 since 1965, but now it has been reduced to 25, if theres no other sign stating the limit. This change was done because of the recent tests about the % or chance a person has to live if they get hit by a moving vehicle at a certain speed limit. Drawing by Jose Carpinter.

Drivers in NYC were recently asked to slow down to the new State speed limit is now 25 mph, instead of 30. This is all part of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” plan, to cut down on car related fatalities. Slowing down the speed from 30 to 25 mph decreases the chance of death in an accident by 16%, according to keepkidsalivedrive, org.

“I feel like it takes a lot longer to get places. 5 mph doesn’t seem like a lot but it feels like a lot,” senior Anthony Castagliola said.

According to nymag.com, there were 291 crash related deaths last year. Clearly, Mayor de Blasio saw something severely wrong with this, and wanted to put an end to it.

De Blasio is the first person to do anything about this in history. According to nymag.com “Never, really [been changed]. It’s been 30 miles per hour since 1965.”
