New York City’s residential areas will feature taller and denser structures for housing. This new housing plan will also mandate the construction of more affordable housing, and rewrite the city’s old residential zoning map.

This plan was passed by the City Council in March and will change how housing works in the five boroughs. This is taking place in the largest city in the nation, and calls for the development of more affordable housing. The City hopes it will slow down people being priced out of their homes.

To qualify for one of the houses, the person’s income must be between $31,450 and $35,280 a year. The house provided is a one-bedroom apartment priced at $844 a month. To see the process of getting an affordable house, click here.

Developers of these zones will be allowed to build taller buildings, get low-interest financing, and gain some tax advantages. This would also be the strictest law for housing in the U.S. This would take a total of ten years and is meant to make 80,000 new homes, and preserve 120,000 old ones.

“This is a good idea and think will help a lot of people, but knowing a lot of people it would be abused,” junior Frank Ferrara said

This bill is a huge win for Mayor Bill de Blasio, and fellow New York state and city Democrats.
