Baseball is Back

The 2024 MLB season is starting in less than a month, with opening day on March 28th.

All teams will begin their season on March 28th with the exception of the two game series between the LA Dodgers and San Diego Padres in Seoul beginning March 20th. That will be the first set of MLB games held in South Korea ever.

Last season’s World Series champion was the Texas Rangers, overcoming the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games. The next champion will be decided by November of this year, with the playoffs beginning at the start of October.

Last season, the MLB implemented a rule allowing the use of a pitch clock, where if the pitcher pitches after the countdown expires, the team will be penalized. This was introduced to shorten game time and improve viewer experience.

This rule is being tweaked for the 2024 season, with the pitch clock being shortened for runners on bases.

The MLB is also shortening the number of mound visits each team is allowed per game from five to four. Mound visits are when the coach/manager of a team could walk up to the pitcher’s mound to talk to their pitcher.

WJPS 12th grader, Alejandro Ortiz said, “I am very excited for the upcoming season. I hope the Yankees will make it all the way this year.”

WJPS 9th grader, Lambreeni Dzelves said, “This year baseball will be much quicker because of the rule changes so I’m excited to see it.”
