Mickey Mouse enters the Public Domain

By: Alexis Bravo, Features Reporter

It all started in 1928 when Walt Disney created the character Mickey Mouse. He first appeared in the feature film, Plane Crazy. He also made an appearance in “Steamboat Willie” which became a role the character was famous for appearing in.

After decades with this character, this new year has lots to come for the mouse. Last year, the copyright on “Steamboat Willie” expired after almost a century.

This means that Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain. The public domain is known as creative materials that aren’t protected by copyright. This means if anyone uses the Mickey Mouse in other media, there won’t be any consequences since the public technically now owns it.

There’s already some films in development. One in particular is a horror film based on Steamboat Willie. Mickey Mouse is not named and will be known as the Steamboat Willie. He’ll portray a killer who attacks the ferry passengers.

WJPS teacher Mr. Cross said, “I’m all for public domain. I think copyright is an infringement among creativity. I think this is going to have a positive impact for all creators.”

WJPS teacher Mrs. Bonanni said, “I think Mickey Mouse is such an iconic figure. I think he’s finally free, however we should not abuse it since many directors want to change the character.”
