DeepFakes

DeepFakes

The practices of the use of artificial intelligence softwares have been increasing significantly within the last couple of years, evidently shown through the rapid rates of improvement the technology has been serving their designated function.

Deepfakes are the practice of digitally altering a person’s face or body in a video, making them seem to be someone else.

This is done through the use of a technology named “Deep Learning,” which is an artificial intelligence which uses algorithms to find a solution to the prompt given by the user.

This technology is widely-accessible through different applications you can download through your mobile device or computer.

With this ease of accessibility for this technology, there have been cases in which people use it maliciously. Some users create videos either promoting a product or stating various controversial things, and later imprint celebrities’ faces onto the video.

Although the action of deepfaking is not illegal, it is possible to be sued for slander or libel if used to be malicious to people or brands.

WJPS teacher, Ms. Shields stated, “The idea of A.I and deepfakes need to be more educated to the youth so people don’t use the technology to manipulate situations, and use it for malpractices, misrepresenting people and what they are trying to convey.

WJPS freshman, Nicholas Zubovic said, “The technology’s scary, I wonder what the future will have in store for deepfakes in terms of laws affecting it.”
