NYC Taxi Goes Electric in 2030

NYC+Taxi+Goes+Electric+in+2030

New York City Mayor Eric Adams outlined in the State of the City Address to convert all taxis to electric. Uber and Lyft will be mandated to obtain a zero emission fleet by 2030 to promote the plan.

According to nyc.gov, as of September 2022, New York City’s electric fleet totals more than four thousand vehicles, with a goal of an all-electric fleet by 2035. The main objective of this action is to make the city more environmentally friendly and sustainable, to meet the challenges of climate change.

Mayor Adams said, “That’s zero emissions for over 100,000 vehicles on our city streets. And it will be achieved with no new costs for individual drivers. We’re pleased that both companies are embracing this shift, and we look forward to working with them to get it done.”

According to afdc.energy.gov, electric vehicles use less fuel than conventional vehicles, all-electric vehicles emit zero emissions and help reduce the cost of fuel.

WJPS ninth grader, Giselle Nunez stated, “I think it’s unnecessary to change to electric cars because it’s a waste of time and hassle, and doesn’t offer much benefit over a gasoline car.”

“Electric cars would greatly reduce emissions and would be beneficial for our environment,” said Ms. McCloskey, WJPS Dean.
