While announcing a new subway safety plan, Mayor Eric Adams stated “No more smoking. No more doing drugs. No more sleeping. No more just doing whatever you want.”

According to the NYC official website, the plan lays out supporting people who experience homelessness, and mental illness on the New York City subway.

The purpose of the plan was to provide a safe environment for people riding the subway. As part of the plan, people who aren’t leaving at the end of the train would be escorted off.

Police are required to enforce the MTA’s Code of Conduct. This prohibits things like panhandling, smoking, creating an unsanitary environment, and sleeping on trains.

WJPS sophomore, Ezri Munoz, said, “The new safety plan would help clear up the subway tracks and hopefully get rid of anyone who might cause trouble. The subway might be the only place for some people, and they need to get support to help them with their troubles.”

Another WJPS sophomore, Julissa Quintanilla, stated, “This new safety plan seems to head in the right direction to provide a more safe subway ride for passengers. Violence in the subway has been on the rise for a while, and these new steps towards a safer subway seem hopeful.”
