Maximum Security

Metal detectors are devices that are programmed to detect metal objects, such as weapons like knives or guns, in the bags of a person who enters a place that has them.

“We have an incredibly low crime rate, and as a school community we’ve built a bond that includes trust, compassion, tolerance, and ongoing communication. I also feel like metal detectors in schools assume that students will do the wrong thing. At this time our incident rate is very low, and as per the DOE guidelines we do not require metal detectors,“ commented assistant principal Mrs. Poulos.

Ms. Saifun, the security guard at WJPS, stated, “I do not think metal detectors should be installed in WJPS because it gives us the tagline that this school is bad. I don’t think anyone would come here if they knew this was a metal detector monitored school.“

WJPS Junior Kayla Blaskovic said, “Yes and no, because they’re unnecessary due to us having no threats. However, in case something in the future happens like a student bringing in a weapon, we should be prepared by already having them installed. I think it’s 50/50.”
