Student Opportunities from the NYPD

Student Opportunities from the NYPD

Recently, WJPS students attended an assembly regarding different programs run by the NYPD including the Explorers Program and Youth Leadership Council.

The NYPD Explorers program is geared towards those interested in law enforcement.  During the assembly, Officer Michael Cillis and Officer Kristin Kirby talked about the skills learned in the explorer’s program.

Explorers not only learn law enforcement tactics, but they also learn to become better public speakers, participate in community service, and discuss current events.  “We try to help however we can. We learn self-discipline,” said Officer Cillis.

Officer Kirby said that being a part of the explorer program teaches participants “Why we do what we do, why we respond the way we respond. Cops are not just the uniform.”

Explorers’ Captain Brenda Baksh said, “It gives you a boost of confidence.”

The Youth Leadership Council “is about being an active member in the community,” said WJPS assistant principal Mr. Petrotta.

Students work with the NYPD to build a stronger community.  Similar to the Explorers’, the Council helps to become a better public speaker through advocating for your community and builds strong leadership skills.

All students 14-18 years old in good academic standing (not failing) are eligible.  These programs are free for all students, who are strongly encouraged to participate.
