WJPS Water Testing

Water+Fountain

By: Scott Morsette, News Reporter

WJPS student, Evan Evripiotis believes that we “not only deserve to know,  but should have the right to know if something is happening that can affect me.” Our school recently went through a test to check for the purity of the water.

Students were first informed to this issue on February 14, 2017 through a send home letter. This letter stated that “the remediated fixtures were tested and the final laboratory results indicate that all samples taken and tested were below the action level of 15 parts per billion.”

This means that the water coming from our water fountains and other water sources was found to have a level of lead which is over 15 parts per billion; the Center for Disease Control standard.

According to the New York State School Board Association, “The law and regulations mandate that all public school districts test all potable water outlets on school property for lead contamination, remediate any discovered contamination, and notify the public and parents of schoolchildren of the results of testing. Potable water outlets include any taps that could be used for drinking or cooking; this includes everything from a water fountain outside of a gymnasium to sinks in a school building to a faucet near an athletic field.”
