Investigative journalist and the vital part on the downfall of Stephen Glass, Adam Penenberg, came to speak to the 9th grade classes. He gave them further insight to parts of the movie, Shattered Glass, that wasn’t seen in theaters.

“I didn’t assume it was made up… I assumed I wasn’t a great reporter,” journalist Penenberg said.

Twenty years ago, the internet was brand new and news websites were rare. So many people had no idea how to detect fake websites and fake articles. Penenberg who specialized in technology was really interested on how an article as technology-based as it was landed in the hands of Glass.

That process for discovering the truth behind the article interested students the most. Almost all students were curious on how similar to the movie was to the actual event. Penenberg told them  that there was a transcript of the actual phone call itself, so the scene was the actual event that happened in real life.

Giving good advice and answering questions from the young journalists, Penenberg gave the students insight to a world they’ll soon be in.

“[One piece of advice that Penenberg shared was] not to trust everything that’s on the internet and always go to the original resource to see if [the information] is true,” freshman Deborah Cobourne said.
