Located at 170 East 70th street, the New York School of Interior Design [NYSID], provided a look at a different type of art school for students in the Fashion Club. The club embarked on the trip to the school on Wednesday, March 2nd .

Entering the school, the club immediately noted that it was pretty small and later learned that NYSID has only 700 students, about 100 more than WJPS. We were led

on a tour by a faculty member and a student who currently attended the school.

Before the tour started the club was brought into the auditorium where one of the guides talked to the students about the summer program they offered. It would be two weeks long and students who attended would live on campus.

“Even though I currently attend a summer program at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYSID’s summer program sounded very interesting and would definitely help someone who wanted to go into the interior design field get a taste of what they would be doing,” junior and head of the Fashion Club Nicole Stemmler said.

The club then got brought into a lighting lab, which our guides explained was for the use of seeing how different light affected how different fabrics looked, since in interior design it’s best for a student’s fabric to look good in every light.

Our guides then went into the school’s drawing studio where students work on sketching by hand, the student guide told students that when attending the school, a student first learns how to re-write the alphabet. The student guide also told the club not to worry if students had no drawing skills since one can always use the drawing studio which has plenty of tools available to help a person draw anything.

“I think that this trip gave us so much information about different kinds of design and how to utilize each of them,” junior Elizabeth Browne added.

After the drawing studio, students got to witness small scale projects that students had created, as well as the school’s library and their laser cutter machine that the students used to create small scale projects.

When the tour was over the students got to eat in the school’s cafe, which offered sandwiches, packaged foods, muffins, coffee, chips and much more.

“I thought the trip was super fun and interesting, even though interior design is different than fashion, which our club is about,” junior Stephanie Mantilla  said.
All in all the trip to the New York School of Interior Design was very informative and gave the students a lot to consider if they wanted to pursue attending  a design based school.
