GFriend has made their long awaited comeback with their third mini-album SNOWFLAKE. Their last album release was in July 2015 with their song “Me Gustas Tu”.

The album title is a good representation of the group’s character. The word “snowflake” suggests that GFriend is fragile, yet beautiful. This album also shows the group’s hope to continuously shine and grow musically as they perform more songs.

GFriend, who are also known as Girlfriend in Korea, made their debut in January 2015. Since their debut, they have gained a lot of attention because of their powerful choreography and sentimental lyrics. This is unlike a majority of today’s K-pop girl groups, who focus on sexy themes. Their previous album releases have titled them as the “powerful and innocent” girl group.

“In the music video, the dance moves are strong and ‘on-point,’ kind of like some boy groups’ [dance moves]. They are not like the usual sexy icon that other girl groups are known for,” junior Renee Choong said.

Tracklist

The title track, “Rough,” radiates both an optimistic and an ominous mood. These feelings are emphasized by the drum beats that lead the other instruments in the song. This song is a story of a girl who has lasting regrets for not being able to confess her love to the special someone. She hopes to run through time to meet her special someone as an adult.

This song was a bit different from the songs of their previous albums, “Me gustas tu” and “Glass Bead”. Unlike the two songs, “Rough” carried a slightly sadder tone and melody. Also, during the performances, they did not smile as brightly as they have done so in their other performances. This was a change in the performance style of the group, but fans have still shown a great amount of love towards this song.

“The song ‘Rough’ was really interesting. The singing for the most part was amazing and they were in sync. Compared to other K-pop groups, this one stands out because of how natural they are. And the music video was really simple but effective at catching the attention. Dancing is a huge part of how a group is judged by me, at least when it comes to K-pop, and the dance moves were great and in sync as well. Overall, I am going to be obsessed with this song now as it is truly what you would expect to see from any Kpop group: perfection,” junior Amina Chowdhury said.

Say My Name,” is a pop-style song that includes a repeating riff during the verses and a calm harp melody throughout the chorus. In terms of the lyrics, the members have thought of giving up on believing in miracles of love because it seemed impossible to grab the attention of their lovers. However, in the end, the man of their dreams was there.

Luv Star,” is a song that best fits the pure and lively image of GFriend. It starts with a conversation among the members as they are stargazing. When they see a shooting star, they promise to never let their love change.

Someday,” encourages people to laugh even on the days they want to cry. The strings, piano, and the drums that are clearly audible add to the upbeat and cheerful mood of the song.

GFriend took the chance to sing a ballad song for the first time as they sung, “Trust.” It is a love story of a girl who wants to confess that her relationship with her boyfriend is a miracle and not a skimming chance.

On February 2nd, GFriend won the weekly award on The Show for being voted as the top song of the week. It was their first ever win on a live show. They will continue to promote their album through various other music programs and entertainment shows.
