David Robert Jones, known to the world as David Bowie passed away on January 10, after battling cancer for 18 months at the age of 69.

“I am deeply saddened by his death. It came very unexpected. He pushed a lot of boundaries whether that be musical, social, gender or fashion. He is an important figure in history and will never be forgotten. I think he was one of the only rock musicians who was able to document his final days and you can really see that in the album he released only a few days before his death,” senior Barbara Kasomenakis said.

To many people Bowie is known for his flamboyant alter egos, his most well known one being Ziggy Stardust. He also played Thin White Duke, Major Tom and Jareth the King Goblin.

Even though many are sad about the loss of a legend, Bowie will continue to live on through his music and famous songs like “Starman”, “Rebel Rebel” and “Life of Mars.”

“He was very much an integration of race and music. I remember his music when it came out, he had a big hit called “Let’s Dance” and it was filmed in Australia where I grew up. I’ve always admired him as an individual,” English teacher Mr. Cross said.

Along with his departure from the earth Bowie released his new album Blackstar on his birthday January 8th, just two days before his death. Along with the release of the album he released the music video for the single “Lazarus.” This album has been well received and was his parting gift to the world. His album made it to No.1 on the Itunes charts in the UK and No. 2 in the United states.

“He was an incredible musician and pioneer mixing rock n roll and entertainment and merging the two and her was also on the cutting edge of blurring gender norms,” Assistant Principal Mr. Jurman said.
