Calling all juniors and seniors, Stony Brook is now accepting applications for their week long journalism program in July. Previously open to only Long Island high schoolers, they have now extended the application to Brooklyn and Queens high schoolers.

Their annual Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists takes place on July 19 to the 25th and is a summer course designed to give high school students that will be juniors and seniors in September a chance to learn and experience journalism from reporters, editors, and photographers.

“Our students, knowledge or no, get a condensed version of our four year program. They learn to get interviews, learn the tools for broadcasting. At the end of the week, they come up with the Green Gazette, including broadcast pieces. It is a very intense week,” Program coordinator Maureen Robinson said.

Selected students have the benefit of using state of the art technology and techniques to determine the correct approaches for becoming a reporter.

This application is now open and will close on April 10th. Students can access the application by visiting greenegazette.com. In the application, students need to send a list of relevant school activities (specifying journalism experiences), a letter of recommendation, and a typed essay of why they want to participate in this program (500 words).

“I’ve been looking to get an internship in journalism and I think this can help broaden what I know,” junior Aja Landolfi said.

Students need parental consent for when they room on campus. For free, students will live on campus, be instructed, and have all meals. However, there is a $200 administration fee to be paid when the student is accepted. This fee can be waived if there is financial hardships, but this comes on a case by case basis.
