The WJPS uniform policy states, “Students must be in uniform from arrival at school until they leave the building. They may not change out of their uniform in school bathrooms at the end of the day.”

When students are not wearing the uniform the teacher responses include, but are not limited to: “writing up” the student, lunch detention, or phone call to parent/guardian.”

However, the policy has many untrue statements, since the phone calls are received home, or any so-called “write-ups” aren’t as enforced as they claimed. WJPS is more focused on getting rid of personal technology, rather than students not wearing their uniforms. 

Many students disagree with the WJPS uniform policy as students feel that wearing uniforms doesn’t allow for them to be themselves during the school day. What if some students were able to strive in school by being themselves, but they are being held back because of uniform protocols?

WJPS junior, Abihail Luque stated, “I don’t like the uniform, I rather not wear it, I really don’t see the point of it. The letters on the tee shirts fit awkwardly and uncomfortably.” 

WJPS junior, Valentina Londono stated, “I don’t mind the uniform much, but I would prefer if we didn’t have a uniform policy at all since it’s become pointless, at least for high school students.”

While some students understand the uniform policy is meant to differentiate I.S 25 children from WJPS students, WJPS is a very small school which doesn’t make it hard to remember who’s in this school. 

This would mean teachers already know the faces of students of the school where so the distinction of a WJPS uniform wouldn’t be necessary. 

WJPS forces students to waste money on uniforms when instead it could be used towards benefitting their education. 

It’s time to cancel WJPS school uniforms.
