No More MetroCards

No+More+MetroCards

By: Jamie Chicaiza, Community Reporter

Near the end of 2023, the MTA will stop the use of MetroCards and start using their OMNY system which requires any source of a digital wallet or type of smart card.

The OMNY system has a website in order for the riders to be able to track their progress. Opinions are mixed on the new system.

WJPS junior, Kelly Lucero stated, “I think the MTA switching to the OMNY system is a bad idea because it could be hard for some people to have access to any source of smart card such as, some elderly people and students. The only good side to this situation is that when someone uses their card they won’t have to worry about recharging their card all the time.”

Yadira Chicaiza , a student who uses public transportation stated, “It is sad knowing that the MetroCards could be possibly gone by the end of 2023 because they were the easiest and fastest way for me to be able to get on the train.”
