At WJPS, there is a cell phone policy expected to be followed by all students. Students may bring cell phones to school, but they may not be turned on or used at school unless a teacher gives permission.

With WJPS’s phone policy, WJPS principal Dr. Werner hopes to “create students who can use them for educational purposes, and be self-aware.”

However, in recent times there has been an increase in unauthorized phone usage at WJPS.

“Everybody seems to be tuned out, and at this point, socialization should be back to what it needs to be,” said WJPS teacher Ms. Marks.

Whether it’s during morning announcements or through hallway reminders by staff throughout the day, students are told to keep their phones “off and away throughout the day” or their phones are subject to be confiscated.

Yet, WJPS junior, Victoria Distl argued, “several students use their phones for academics, and teachers shouldn’t make a big deal out of it as the students who want to pay attention already are.”

However, WJPS junior Dayssy Acuahuitl countered, “Some students say they use their phones for work but instead go on other distracting apps and don’t complete their work. This foolishness affects them, but that is ultimately their responsibility and fault for not listening.”
