Testing for the Spanish “Languages Other Than English” test, also known as the LOTE exam is taking place at WJPS now though June 17th.

AT WJPS, the test consists of two sections; a speaking portion where a student and teacher have a verbal conversation in Spanish, and a writing portion where the student listens to a prompt in Spanish and answers multiple choice questions.

WJPS Spanish teacher Mr. German stated, “I think that testing is going in the right direction, but it needs to be revised and done more realistically to adjust to the needs of the student and their knowledge.”

WJPS junior Jessica DeRosa, a non-native Spanish speaker, stated, “I don’t think the LOTE exam should be required because no other institutions besides New York take it into account so I think it’s added stress onto an already hectic testing schedule.”

Another WJPS junior Sandra Amastal commented, “I think the LOTE exam is okay because I’m already a native Spanish speaker and I might find some difficulties while testing, but not as much as I normally would. The people who administer the exams should consider the non-native Spanish speakers and make it easier for them.”
