Are Review Books Necessary?

Are+Review+Books+Necessary%3F

One way of studying for a test is by reviewing with a test prep book. These books usually include summaries, along with test-taking tips, and practice tests.

With today’s technology, it seems redundant and wasteful to buy books that will eventually get thrown out, all for a study session. However, the dynamic pen and paper lure many students, and some teachers prefer it over technology.

WJPS science teacher Mr. Van Deurs said, “Students having paper in front of them gives them more agency. It’s also a well-organized full practice set which shows more tangible results.”

Similarly, WJPS Junior Dayssy Acuahuitl said, “Though not as environmentally friendly, books offer reassurance. I know if I am reviewing with a book on a topic I need information on, I’ll find it, it’s guaranteed, versus hoping a Google search will have something.”

Giving students access to a computer can be valuable because it can personalize the experience and be less wasteful.

WJPS Senior Lianna Zuvich said, “We do many different kinds of reviews in class, and teachers teach every day, it seems [useless] to spend money on a book that will make me question my actions rather than review.”

Since students have access to both print and online resources, it’s a matter of finding ways to make the most of both. Finding the ideal balance isa what enhances the experience of reviewing.
