As January passes through, the New York City Department Of Education’s health and safety measures continue to ensure the protection of students and staff.

These measures include providing at-home tests, shortening the quarantine policy, and possibly providing a remote option for sick students. There are various opinions throughout WJPS about the measures.

“I like how they’re giving students take-home tests, since the test can find out if they have COVID or not quicker, therefore limiting the spread. This way, it’ll be beneficial for those who weren’t infected to keep attending school and not waste time quarantining at home unnecessarily,” commented WJPS junior Jessica DeRosa.

WJPS teacher Mr. Gembara said, “I think that it’s not effective because in many cases more kids are at home than at school. For example, Concourse Village Elementary School, the school that the Mayor and Chancellor talked about not too long ago, had 41% attendance at home, so while they’re celebrating the effectiveness of the new policies, more kids are at home not receiving instruction.”

“In regards to the new quarantine policy, I’m not sure if five days is the right amount of time since everyone’s symptoms vary; for instance some people might lie and say they feel fine and be out and about when in reality they could still be contagious,” stated WJPS teacher Ms. Douvres.
