Recap of the 2015 Grammys

Music’s biggest night took place on Sunday. On February 8th, the 57th annual Grammy’s had artists, actors/actresses, and more come together at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California to award music’s biggest names.
With a whopping 899 nominations, most of the awards were announced in a pre Grammy telecast for 2 hours before the show, and also announced on the official Twitter for the Grammy’s.
“I was very excited for the Album of the Year category because it’s a very big award for the Grammys. This year, there were so many great albums nominated just as there were for Song of the Year. I was excited to see who was going to win because it was so hard to pick a winner between the nominations,” sophomore Janae Kea said.
Performances dominated the actual award ceremony, with a total of 36 performers and 23 performances in the three and a half hour award show. Performances included the opening act of AC/DC, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Madonna, and Beyonce as the closing act.
Many performers also dedicated their performances to people and current events/issues today; Katy Perry sang and dedicated her hit “By The Grace of God” to people who have experienced domestic violence, Pharrell’s “Happy” was sung for the racial tensions going on in America today, and Usher tributed Grammy legend Stevie Wonder. “The performances were good, but could have been better. There should have been more live collaborations than solo performances,” senior Alyssa Schwind said.
Although the Grammy’s awards every genre in the music industry, it was mostly the pop culture awards that were given out during the show with the exception of Best Rock Album, Best Country Album, and Best R&B Performance.
Some of the most anticipated awards of the night were the “Big Four” (Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year), Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Singer Beck won both Best Rock Album and Album of the Year, making it the biggest surprise of the night that he dominated Beyonce, Sam Smith, Pharrell, and Ed Sheeran in that specific category. Smith was the biggest winner of the night with four of the major awards, taking home Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album. Beyonce and Pharrell were also big winners, taking home two Grammys for music’s biggest night.
This night was also an upset for some of biggest pop’s names. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Sia were nominated for multiple awards but did not take home any Grammys.
“Eminem deserved his award for Best Rap Album because his album was organized best and was also way better compared to his competition,” junior Demetri Mihalios said.
