Walt Disney has been making movies since 1937 starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and now they have released their latest film, Into the Woods. The movie is an intricately woven musical that combines many fairy-tale stories into one.

Based on the musical that first debuted in San Diego in 1986 then on Broadway in 1987, the movie follows a wide variety of tales. The film includes Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, as well as an original story about the childless baker and his wife.

“I thought that the combination of characters went really well and I loved the actors they put in the movie, they were all so good,” movie-goer Michelle Stewart said.

Into the Woods starred well-known actors such as Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Johnny Depp, and many more. Some of them played creepier roles such as Johnny Depp who played the wolf and Meryl Streep as the witch. While it is a Walt Disney movie and is rated PG, there are some grotesque scenes that might frighten small children.

All throughout the movie there are instant shifts in mood that are brought on by song. The happier of the songs are Into the Woods and No One Is Alone, while songs such as Hello, Little Girl and Last Midnight performed by the wolf and the witch bring about worry and fear. Being a musical there was very little talking so the mood was based almost entirely off of all the songs sang, and at some points songs overlapped making it hard to follow what was going on.

By featuring scenes that would make sense to people of an older age, Disney has given themselves a larger audience. Prior to Into the Woods, the majority of Disney movies mainly appealed to children and parents. Now they have opened up their doors to older viewers who can enjoy the somewhat inappropriate comments and creepy scenes that the younger crowd might not understand.

Into the Woods is a musical that people of all ages can enjoy, there is something in there for everyone.
