Filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a lengthy process that can be frustrating and confusing to both parents and students. Local universities, St. John’s and Hofstra are now offering workshops to make this process less daunting.

St. John’s is hosting a “FAFSA Filing 101” on January 11, 2014. The program will address the following:

  • Learning to complete the application

  • Tips on how to avoid common mistakes

  • Learn how to expedite the process

  • Be able to speak to financial aid experts

There also will be an opportunity to speak to the university’s admission counselors to get more information on the admissions application process, as well as take a tour around the campus.

This event will occur in a seminar, and will be held at both the Queens and Staten Island campuses, beginning at 10 a.m. There will also be a second session on the Queens campus will also start at 12 p.m.
“I plan to attend this event to learn how to fill out the FASFA correctly, so my financial aid package is returned in timely condition,” senior Rita Cinquemani said.

At Hofstra there will be a “Financial Aid Workshop,” on January 9th held by the Student Financial Service. The Workshop will consist of a walk through the FAFSA by financial aid officials. There will also be a presentation on federal and state grants. Check-in will start at 6:45 p.m. at the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus.

Hofstra is also be offering student financial service webinars, where students and parents can find out about the FAFSA through their website.

“I think it would be helpful for people who wouldn’t be able to get make it. My mom wouldnt be able to take me so the webinar would give me access just the same,” senior Ariana Montagnino said.

If you couldn’t attend the seminar would you be interested in this, if so why?

“The colleges based their need-base funding on information from the FAFSA and it’s an important data point for the federal government. Attending these seminars will help them feel more comfortable and make the process smoother,” college counselor Mr. Lumetta said.
