Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York put a ban on cellphones, iPads and other electronic devices from school. Mayor De Blasio of New York plans to change this by lifting the ban. According to abc news, the new policy changes will be put into effect on March 2nd.

According to Eyewitness news Chancellor Carmen Farina and Mayor de Blasio believe that this will be better for the schools with metal detectors whom do not allow students to even bring cell phones to school. This will allow parents to stay in touch with their children.

Some people believe that this is good for the students. Cell phones have access to the internet. The internet is used for many things such as socializing, video chatting, blogging, research and much more all around the world. In schools, they distribute laptops or take the class to the computer rooms to do the work that they need to do online. But with your phones you wont have to do that.

Most kids who use technology to get their work done get a higher grade than one student who just writes down what they remember. This is because students who write down things from prior knowledge forget to add important outside information and they become vague. With the help of technology you could learn some new things and broaden your horizon. This will be very effective in your writing.

“I think that cellphones and other devices should be allowed during free periods such as lunch. It is necessary to be able to bring your cell phones to school, but they should be prohibited during crucial classes. However, being able to use it during free periods sets standards for students. Emphasis must be made that you may not use it during important classes, and discipline must be given promptly if a student does not follow protocol. Therefore, I believe cell phones may be used in certain times of the school day, but not during important classes,” said junior Binnah Cha.

But there is always the negative side to things where people believe that cell phones should not be allowed in school. People say this because students are texting or doing what they are not suppose to be doing on their devices, but the fact is that teachers would confiscate them if they saw it. Teachers do this to help the students pay attention. This isn’t a good enough reason to ban electronic devices because they come in handy for every school subject.

“I think that you should [have cell phones] for school purposes because students may need to do a project or research on a class assignment. But if it’s not for things like that then it shouldn’t be used because then you could just go on your phone and start texting or doing other things,” said 8th grader Sabrina Pincay

iPads and laptops are good for many things that’s why we should use them in school. Each time a new phone comes out people get them instantly. We could use them for so many things one couldn’t count. It should be allowed in school as well as in class.
