Public schools in New York City opened up on September 13th with no remote learning option. The local government has been promoting the vaccine since the introduction and encouraged children that are available to take the vaccine to do so.

“700 schools will have the vaccination in school all week long,” stated Mayor Bill de Blasio. The city is also offering $100, free tickets, memberships, or gifts to people getting vaccinated.

The NYC Vaccine Referral Bonus Program was also created to give $100 to people that refer someone to get their vaccine at a city-run site.

“I feel safer being around people that I know are vaccinated as well as being vaccinated myself,” WJPS teacher, Mr. Sampedro said. “I think everybody should get vaccinated so we can get through this.”

“I think the vaccine is effective and it makes me feel slightly safer around others although I’d still prefer if people wore masks,” WJPS senior, Stefany Lin said.
