WJPS Pride club members at have been been putting up pride flags throughout the school to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Pansexual, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, non-binary, and intersex flags have been hung on the doors of teacher’s classrooms.
Next to the flag is a description explaining what the flag represents, a background of its history, and who came up with the flag.
Also included in the description is a break down of what each color of the flag means.
Additionally, all the flags were placed right outside WJPS assistant principal Mr. Petrotta’s office on the third floor.
WJPS freshman, Nicholas Martinez, said, “I think it’s nice that the school is showing that they support the LGBTQ+ community. I know a few people within the school who are a part of it, and it probably makes them feel safe and welcomed by the school.”
During the annual WJPS talent show, Mr. Lao, the adviser of the WJPS Pride club, and 11th grade students showed their support by singing along to Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” and holding all the pride flags.
WJPS eighth grader, Vincent Bayer, said, “I love that WJPS is showing support, it’s cool that they have a club too.”
