Sayings such as “Beauty on the outside doesn’t matter, it’s what’s on the inside” and “Beauty doesn’t get you anywhere” aren’t really taken too far and applied to one’s own life. It’s simply used as a cushion statement to spare the feelings of others.
Attractive people have an advantage over unattractive people in many aspects of life, including the work and social aspects of life.
“Attractive people have an advantage because a lot of the time someone is [considered] approachable based on how they look,” junior Kaila Pulley said.
Attractive people have advantages in the social aspect of life because people tend to want to talk to them more. People think that unattractive people are weird and dirty and they don’t want those words to associate with their own image. The goal for some people is to make friends with a bunch of pretty people to be in the pretty group which will help make them look better.
“In today’s day and age looks apply to not only societies views but job interviews as well. You can have the same mentality as the next woman or man applying for a job but sometimes if you’re more attractive you are more inclined to get the job,” junior Sabrina Rasizzi said.
Good looking people have a huge advantage in the work aspect of life. According to the MPRA (Munich Personal Repec Archive) study, Italian researchers sent more than 10,000 resumes out, using the same one and changing only the first name, last name, address, and the photo included to test the impact of beauty. The attractive people had a 36% higher callback rate than the unattractive ones. This study used the same photos in different resumes, digitally modifying faces to make them scientifically less attractive.
In contrast, some people believe that looks do not have much of an impact on how others are viewed in society.
“I don’t think attractive people have that much of an advantage because we as humans have other factors that should be taken into account. Just because you’re pretty or good looking doesn’t mean you have a good character or personality,” sixth grade math teacher Ms. Song said.
Some believe that looks aren’t everything, and personality matters the most. People live in a cynical world and people do judge books by their covers. However, the quote “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart,” Kahlil Gibran said, can contribute to how a person’s personality can have a bigger impact than a person’s looks.
Attractive people have an advantage over others. Whether it is in school, in work, or in social situations those who are ‘pretty’ have the advantage. They get more attention and are rewarded for how they look. Although it is a messed up concept it is just how society is made up.
