March 20th, 2025 marks the day where President Donald Trump signed an executive order to begin dismantling the United States Department of Education. Getting rid of the United States Department of Education (USDOE) is an impractical idea.
The United States Department of Education has been around since 1979 and is responsible for equal access to education, and funding for schools and higher education. Getting rid of the USDOE will potentially take these policies away.
Getting rid of the USDOE can cause damage for the many students who come from low-income backgrounds and communities who need resources and support offered by the Department of Education.
Many students rely on benefits given by the United States Department of Education. For instance, Pell Grants are given out by the USDOE to make college more affordable for low-income students.
WJPS 10th grader Layla Ma said, “I think that his idea of getting rid of the department of education is going too far and difficult to implement unless he has plans to replace or to upgrade the NYC school systems.”
WJPS 12th grader Erica Lin said, “I think that Donald Trump is really overusing his powers, the department of education is only trying to look out for us and the future generation of the United States.”
